My Microsoft Internship Journey

My Microsoft Internship Journey

People would usually ask me how was my experience being an intern in Microsoft. I would usually reply along the words awesome, immersive and fun. But let me tell you my internship story as to how I was able to describe my internship with those three words. I joined Microsoft under the Services team as a Technical Account Manager Intern for 5 months.

AWESOME

Awesome People. From onboarding to my final day as intern, the University Recruitment Team made sure that I was learning and enjoying at the same time. It was really nice to have the team guide me in navigating the company and helping me in improving my own skills. Within my stay in Microsoft, I was already able to meet a ton of people. From co-interns from different countries to high respected people in the company. It gave us, interns, a chance to network with thought leaders and even ask what are in their minds as of the moment. Conversing with them gave me a better understanding of what the company does. After all, one of the reasons why I wanted to work for this company was because of its mission (besides the fact that it is one of the biggest tech giants). Its mission was to “empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more”. From day one, I saw that each person in Microsoft was working towards this mission. I can feel their passion through the work that they put in. As the saying goes, you should surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel, energies are contagious. I guess this saying is true as it was definitely how I felt working with my team in Microsoft.

IMMERSIVE

Immersive experience. The common notion on interns would usually be running errands, getting coffee or photocopying documents. Well, not here in Microsoft. I was surprised when the projects given to me had impactful value to the company. It was exciting and nerve cracking at the same time because being given that responsibility means they trust you but at the same it feels like you can’t screw up. But another thing in Microsoft is they are adapting the growth mindset culture, wherein it’s okay to fall down as long as you get up and learn from that mistake. It felt amazing to see that I was part of something big because of the project that I was doing. How my work can help in achieving the mission of the company. It was interesting to see that even as an intern, you are given the opportunity to make an impact to the company and experience it first hand. As a technical account manager intern, I was also able to immerse myself with the real job of my intern role aside from the projects. I was lucky enough to go with the TAMs to their client meetings and see how they would handle their customers and their concerns. It definitely helped me in understanding the company and my role better.

This was from one of our projects entitled Digigirlz wherein we encourage high school girls to seek out opportunities in the science and tech space.

Meet the Services team during our offsite planning. Beyond grateful to be part of this team as everyone helped me in learning what it was like to be a TAM.

FUN

Fun. Just Pure Fun. I’d say this is not your ordinary internship experience. From learning new things everyday in the office to flying out to another country. The intern learning week, which was held in Singapore this year, is one of the highlights in my internship journey in Microsoft. This was where I get to meet really cool people, enhance my skills and know more about the company. It was a week full of learning, games and getting freebies. Just look at the photos and video to see how much fun it was:

Summing up my whole internship story, Microsoft helped me meet awesome people that paved the way to my curious mind, an immersive experience wherein I was given the chance to make an impact to the company as an intern and lastly, have a fun learning experience all through out. It was indeed a roller coaster ride that I’d want to ride on again :)
